Exchange of gunfire outside bar in Birmingham’s Lakeview District leaves 4 wounded

Four people were wounded when gunfire erupted in a bar parking lot in Birmingham’s popular Lakeview District early Sunday.

An off-duty Birmingham police officer was working inside Tin Roof when, about 12:45 a.m., someone ran into the bar and told him there had been a shooting outside. The bar is located at 2709 Seventh Ave. South.

More officers, as well as Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, rushed to the scene.

Police Lt. Ron Harless said the preliminary information suggests an exchange of gunfire took place.

First responders arrived to find a male shot and a female grazed by a bullet outside Tin Roof. Both were transported to UAB Hospital.

An SUV fled the scene after the shooting. That vehicle was stopped on 21st Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues.

Inside the SUV were two males, both seriously injured. They, too, were taken to UAB Hospital.

At least one of them had life-threatening injuries.

Tin Roof closed immediately following the gunfire. Patrons leaving the bar said they did not hear the gunfire but were told to leave.

The investigation is ongoing.
